ICC November inspection slammed pitch

Among the several alerts, official and otherwise, raised about the condition of the Kotla pitch is one from the very highest level: An ICC team inspecting the stadium in connection with the 2011 World Cup passed a scathing indictment of the pitch and said "a considerable improvement of the pitch block" would be required to "make the pitch more acceptable" for Sunday's game.
The chief executive of the ICC Haroon Lorgat, speaking in New Delhi on Monday, did not comment on whether this report would have any bearing on the investigation of Sunday's fiasco but said it would be taken into consideration. "There is an ODI at this venue on 27th December 2009 and considerable improvement of the pitch block will be required by then to make the pitch provided more acceptable" said the report, a copy of which is with Cricinfo. The inspection was carried out on November 4, three days after third ODI of the India-Australia series.
That game, and earlier games during the Champions League Twenty20 where batsmen struggled to counter the low and slow nature of the various pitches on the square, was noted in the November report. "During the Champions League and the India vs Australia ODI series, it was well documented that the performance and condition of the pitches at the stadium were a cause of concern for the players," the report said. The problem with the Kotla pitch - which has already been relaid four times in the last five years under four different curators - stems from the decision, taken immediately after the second IPL was shifted to South Africa, to relay the entire square. During the Champions League Daljit Singh, till Sunday the head of the BCCI's grounds and wickets committee, said it would take about a year for the re-laid pitches to get seasoned. That point of view seems to have been overlooked with the Indian board deciding to stage at Kotla first the Australia ODI and, within two months, the game against Sri Lanka.
The ICC's inspectors, though, were never in doubt about the quality of the surface and their report offered some prescriptions for the longer term. "The pitch block was reconstructed recently and it is clear to see that there are some important issues with the present condition of the pitch surface that it is essential to address prior to CWC 2011." As a remedial measure it suggested that the surface level across the entire square needed to be "readjusted in several areas" to help in growing the grass. The DDCA ground authorities, working with Daljit, had been experimenting with the grass, which resulted in the tufts of green spread across the pitch on which Sri Lanka batted. there has been much talk of differences between local and centralized pitch officials and this was clear to the ICC inspection team. "It was apparent when speaking with the local officials that they are reluctant to openly discuss the problems they are having with the pitch and that they are to some extent in variance with the BCCI Pitch Consultant (Daljit Singh) regarding how they are to move forward to resolve the problems with this surface." According to the ICC team the DDCA were adamant on replanting the pitches with local grass, which they felt would take care of the problem. But that idea was fraught with dangers. "To simply replant without this major renovation of the surface would be a major miscalculation, and would result in inadequate pitches at a later date," the report said. "The dead and the decaying grass and roots left in the soil profile will break down into organic matter and will contribute to the dilution of the clay content of the soil and contribute to the pitches produced in the future being slow in pace, spongy in texture, and would tend to generate slow and inconsistent bounce from the pitches in the future."

UK announces $83 million in new aid to Pakistan

LONDON – British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says he is making 50 million pounds ($83 million) in new funding available to Pakistan to help the country pacify its lawless border with Afghanistan.Brown said the money would go into Pakistan's program to help re-establish its control over the chaotic border region, which he has identified as the source of three-quarters of the terrorist plots that have targeted Britain since 2001.I'm pleased today to confirm my offer of a further 50 million pounds to back your plans for long-term stabilization of the border areas," Brown told his Pakistani counterpart, Yousuf Raza Gilani, at a press conference in central London.Brown said that aid being provided by Britain would go into reconstruction, education and the relocation of people displaced in the fighting.Gilani is in London for talks with the British leader, who has lobbied the country to do more to find the al-Qaida leaders believed to be hiding out in the border region.Brown told the BBC on Sunday that with more troops being sent to Afghanistan, Pakistan needs "to be able to show that it can take on al-Qaida."

On song Australia back up their leader

Australia's bowlers vindicated Ricky Ponting's bold first innings declaration with a disciplined and aggressive display on the second day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Shane Watson and Nathan Hauritz followed their enterprising half-centuries with a top-order wicket apiece, but the major blow was landed by Peter Siddle on the stroke of stumps when Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan captain, was ruled by Billy Doctrove not to have edged a to Brad Haddin, only to have the decision overturned by the video umpire.
Asoka de Silva's ruling left the Pakistanis reeling at 4 for 109 in pursuit of Australia's 5 (dec) for 454. Hot Spot and slow motion replays supported de Silva's assertion that Yousuf gloved the ball down the leg-side in a flinching motion, but the knowledge will come as little comfort to the tourists, who are now faced with a mountainous climb to remain competitive in the match.
Ponting demonstrated Australia's ruthless intent by delcaring less than an hour after the lunch break on Sunday, having watched each of his first five batsmen, the nightwatchman included, notch half centuries. Mitchell Johnson was first to back-up his captain's endeavour by trapping Imran Farhat lbw to a tailing delivery, while Watson, Hauritz and Peter Siddle swung into action in the final session to leave the tourists in a grim fight for survival.
Hauritz, contending with a groin injury that hampered him throughout his 152-ball stay at the crease, coaxed Faisal Iqbal into a cut-shot that was accepted by Michael Clarke at slip. Watson then pressed home Australia's advantage with an excellent spell of reverse swing bowling that accounted for Salman Butt (45) and severely tested the defences of Mohammad Yousuf and Umar Akmal.
Much of the pent-up frustration of the previous day's run-out was released when, from the beginning of his spell, Watson hooped the old ball both ways. His set-up of Butt was one to make Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, Pakistan's pioneers of reverse swing, proud - a succession of away-swingers followed by one which attacked the pads and survived a video appeal.
Doug Bollinger ensured there was no respite for Pakistan's batsmen, attacking the stumps consistently and conceding runs at less than two-per-over. But the final indignity for the tourists was inflicted by Siddle, whose removal of Yousuf eroded any optimism Pakistan had mustered on the second day. Yousuf looked the most assured of Pakistan's batsmen, opening his account with a straight six off Hauritz and battening down thereafter, but his dismissal left only the brothers Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq standing between Australia and the tail.
Earlier, Michael Hussey (82) and Hauritz (75) took Australia's unconverted century tally to an unflattering 20 for the summer, but not before they had propelled the hosts into a position of dominance. Like Watson, Simon Katich and Ponting before him, Hussey appeared in superb touch on a flattening MCG surface. Strong on the cut shot and off his pads, the veteran left-hander provided further reason to believe the worst of his extended form trough was behind him as he registered his 19th Test half-century with a degree of fluency and poise all but absent in his batting for much of 2009.
But with a ton in sight, Hussey fell victim to the impressive Saeed Ajmal, who posed a constant threat to the Australians with deft changes of pace, flight and turn. Ajmal rapped Hussey on the pads while attempting to sweep and was awarded a well-deserved wicket by Doctrove - one upheld by the video umpire on appeal.
Ajmal might well have had Hauritz, the nightwatchman, dismissed earlier in the morning with a direct-hit run-out. Replays showed the ball striking the stumps with Hauritz short of his ground, however they could not prove definitively whether the bail was entirely out of the groove. Hauritz advanced his total to a career-best 75 with a series of strokes more befitting the Twenty20 arena before eventually falling victim to Abdur Rauf via the video. He was ruled lbw by de Silva after being initially spared by Rudi Koertzen, the on-field official.
Of some concern to the Australian camp was Hauritz's grimacing reaction to a quick single taken late in the first session. A groin injury almost ruled him out of this Test - Steven Smith, the New South Wales legspinner, was called in as cover - however his introduction into the attack after just nine overs of the Pakistan innings allayed concerns. The early use of Hauritz, coupled with the surprise declaration, were the latest in a series of aggressive captaincy moves from the reputedly conservative Ponting. An early closure and a rare enforcement of the follow-on in Brisbane last month set the tone for the summer, and the Australian captain maintained course in the first innings at the MCG with his pursuit of Pakistan.

Pound Suffers on U.K.’s Recession Numbers

The pound declined today versus the euro and the U.S. dollar as the Great Britain did not manage to find its way out of recession like multiple wealthy nations around the world already did, shunning investors from pound-priced assets in currency and equities markets.
U.K.’s Office for National Statistics published today its final gross domestic product figures for this year’s third quarter, showing a decline of 0.2 percent for the kingdom’s economy, a more negative number than economists forecast, expecting a 0.1 percent contraction, forcing the pound further down versus most of the 16 main traded currencies in this European afternoon trading session, as the resilience expected by investors regarding the British economy has not been confirmed so far. The dollar has been one of the best performers versus the pound today, specially after yesterday, since for the first time in months, it advanced in correlation with stocks, evidencing a sentiment shift towards the U.S. economy and its currency.
The British economy remains frustrating, it affects the pound directly, according to analysts. As long as the economy in the nation doesn’t catch up with its Eurozone top performing neighbors like Germany and France, the U.K. currency will remain bearish.

Canadian Dollar

The Canadian dollar advanced for a third day in a row after favorable reports showed improving economic conditions in the North American nation, suggesting that interest rates in the country may be hiked sooner than expected. The loonie is ranking among the preferred bets among investors in currency trading this week before a gross domestic report to be published tomorrow indicating a further growth for the Canadian economy according to most of analysts, adding evidences that borrowing costs can be elevated by the Bank of Canada sooner than expected, helping the loonie to gain not only versus its presently strong U.S. counterpart but also versus all of 16 main traded currencies in foreign-exchange markets. The U.S. economic resilience, more evident during the past few weeks as economic data provided optimism regarding the nation’s outlook is also helping the Canadian currency to become more attractive, as the United Stated tops the list of Canada’s trading partner in absolute numbers by far.The GDP data, if confirmed, will provide support for an extended rally to unveil for the loonie, according to analysts. Less attractive currencies like the pound and the euro are likely to post the sharpest losses versus the Canadian dollar in the short term.

Bouncers on menu for Ponting and Hughes

It won't matter whether Ricky Ponting or Phillip Hughes play against Pakistan on Boxing Day, they can both expect a barrage of short balls. Australia are waiting on Ponting's fitness after he was hit on the left elbow ducking a Kemar Roach bouncer in Perth and Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, said they unearthed a glaring weakness in the Australian's game. Gayle said other teams should study the way Roach operated to Ponting in dismissing him three times in the series and forcing him to retire hurt. "Our plan to bowl short at him worked really well and I think they are tactics that other Test teams can use with a lot of success against him," Gayle wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. "Ricky is a person who will always hook and pull - those are some of his favourite shots - but they can also be his major weakness. If you have a bowler with a bit of pace I think you can give him some real trouble."Gayle said Roach tried to hustle Ponting by bowling at his body and getting him to hook or pull. "Ricky definitely looked very uncomfortable," he said. "The plans that we came up with weren't from watching any videos of Ricky, they were just my gut instinct." Hughes is on standby for Ponting and had his own problems with the short ball during the tour of England, which included some rough treatment from Steve Harmison in a warm-up game and Andrew Flintoff in two Tests. He has re-found form after being cut from the national squad and is hoping to get a chance to show he is ready for a long-term run in the side. ''Being dropped is a part of the sport, and I'm a big believer in that,'' Hughes said in the Sydney Morning Herald. ''That's life. What has happened has happened.
''To be in a squad now for a Boxing Day Test, it's the one as a kid you always love to watch and always want to be involved in. It's such a big thing. I've been feeling good in myself but to get the numbers on the board in this game [he scored 122 and 7 against Victoria] … I'll go to Melbourne and be ready if a chance does come up."

Imanae Malik Full story

On November 29, 2009 at 3 am in the morning my 3 year old daughter, Imanae, spilt hot water on her wrist. My wife and I immediately took her to Doctors Hospital and Medical Center in Johar Town, Lahore. Although it was a very small burn, we chose to go to the hospital as our baby was in a lot of pain and we wanted her hurt to go away as quickly as possible.
At the hospital we were met by the emergency ward staff, who applied an ointment on her hand and gave her an injection to soothe the pain. When Imanae continued to cry because of the pain, the nurse called the doctor on duty. I noticed when he walked into the room that he had obviously been asleep and had just been woken up.
The doctor instructed the nurse to give Imanae another injection. Imanae however continued to cry. Fifteen minutes later, the sleepy doctor instructed the nurse to inject Imanae with the 3rd injection. All in all, 5mg of this anesthetic/pain killer was given. This was the moment when my little baby went silent and started losing consciousness. Just before she totally passed out, she started calling out my name and saying that everything was getting blurred and she couldn't see clearly. Little did I know that these were the last words my daughter would ever say.
I asked the doctor what was happening to my daughter, he assured me that she was FINE and was just SLEEPING, and left the room. I however wasn’t satisfied and checked Imanae myself to see if I could feel her breath or hear her heartbeat.
When I couldn't feel either of the two, I immediately informed the nurse. She called the doctor again who used a Heart Beat Monitor to examine Imanae. There was no reading on the monitor. I asked the doctor what that signified and he told me that since the monitor was intended for adult use, it could not detect my baby's hear beat. I WISH I HAD ASKED HIM THEN WHY HE WAS USING IT ON MY HELPLESS AND UNCONSCIOUS CHILD AND WASTING PRECIOUS TIME!!!
At this point, some other doctors present on duty at the hospital joined him as well. They connected Imanae to an ECG machine, but that too also only reported a straight line. My wife asked why the line was straight but the doctors did not reply. They kept on stating that she was fine and was just having some breathing problems. All the doctors present on the scene, started conferring between themselves as they continued to examine her. They continued to ignore our repeated pleas on what was happening to our daughter.
They then started giving her CPR and it was at this point I realised that my baby's life was in danger. The doctors however kept reassuring us that she was fine. They continued conferring between themselves and I was certain that something had gone horribly wrong. Another 20 or so minutes passed in this torture and confusion. They continued to reassure us that she was ok!! IF SHE WAS OK, WHY WAS THERE NO PULSE ON THE ECG...WHY WAS THERE NO HEARTBEAT...WHY WERE THEY GIVING HER CPR, IF SHE WAS OK.....WHY WHY!!!
Finally, one of the doctor told me that she was having difficulty breathing and because Doctors Hospital did NOT HAVE a baby Ventilator we should take her to some other hospital before her condition worsened. They suggested we take her either to Ittefaq hospital or to Fatima Memorial, or that we take her to Ward 23 of the Children's Hospital.
I asked them for an ambulance because she was connected to all kinds of machines, but they told me that the ambulance was not available. However, if we still wanted one...we would have to WAIT for half an hour!!! My baby was not breathing and they wanted me to wait for half an hour!!
I decided to take my dying Imanae in my own car and pleaded with them to give me a doctor to accompany us to Children's Hospital. I did not know what was wrong with her and wanted someone to come along and explain what exactly her condition was. I wanted a list of injections and other medicines given to her, to give to the doctors at Children's Hospital. I wanted a copy of her ECG report.....
Nothing was given......and a WARD boy asked to go along.
It took us 15 minutes to reach Children's Hospital.....where we were told that my 3 year old daughter...my only child...the light of my life...my reason for living...was DEAD!!
Apparently, I am not the only one who has had his life shattered by this hospital. There are several similar incidents where Doctors Hospital have dumped patients whose treatments they have botched, on to other hospitals.
One such incident that I came across was reported a few years ago in the Daily Times:
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2006%5C02%5C12%5Cstory_12-2-2006_pg3_7
With your help, I have discovered several other cases that strongly indicate malpractice and gross negligence by this hospital.
If you are a victim of Doctors Hospital or know of someone who suffered at their hands, please let us know so that we can put it forward and bring the culprits to justice.

O'Brien and openers lift New Zealand

Don't be fooled by the score. It was a flat track in Napier but Iain O'Brien was on a mission to make his last Test memorable and Pakistan's top order, as ever, was in a self-destructive mood. Imran Farhat lifted Pakistan from the depths of 59 for 5 and resuscitated his career with a fighting century but New Zealand will be more than pleased with their efforts, especially after a dogged batting display from the openers, on the first day of the final Test.
Until Farhat produced his hundred it was all O'Brien. At one point his figures read: 4.2-4-3-3. He was hostile throughout his spell, consistently bowling over 140 kmph, and was always accurate but, even so, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that even he would have been slightly surprised by the results.
On a flat pitch, Pakistan's top order contrived to implode yet again by playing poor cricket. Only one batsman, Misbah-ul-Haq, was taken out by a difficult delivery; the rest were simply not good enough. Tim Southee claimed the initial breakthrough when Salman Butt left a gaping gap between bat and pad to lose his middle stump, after which O'Brien took over. And how.
O'Brien sussed out quickly that Faisal Iqbal was a sitting target because of his awkward feet movement and aimed one at his throat, forcing an ugly fend to the slip cordon. He tied up Yousuf with his disciplined lines and lengths before hurling one short of a length outside off stump. Yousuf thought it would be the ideal chance to break the shackles but was done in by the extra bounce and edged it to second slip. It was the recurring theme of a bizarre morning. O'Brien tied up edgy batsmen with his discipline before delivering the knock-out blow with some thing extra. Misbah got a gem early in his innings: The ball held its line outside off and Misbah couldn't help edging it behind. Pakistan's debacle was exemplified by Umar Akmal's dismissal. It was a short-of-length delivery that straightened well outside off stump. It could have been left alone or cut to the point boundary but Umar, the best of the Pakistan batsman in this series, just hung his bat out and guided it straight to gully. Fortunately for Pakistan, though, Farhat couldn't have chosen a better moment to resuscitate his career. It would be churlish to dismiss Farhat's effort as streaky, though there were several play and misses and a couple of curious slogs which would have raised blood-pressure levels in the dressing room, but that's how he seems to play. There were spurts where Farhat seemed to lose concentration and went for pressure-reliving big hits and there were phases where he looked to be in control. Or something resembling it at least.
The fact that the last century by a Pakistan opener outside the subcontinent was Salman Butt's effort in Sydney way back in 2005 would make fans overlook Farhat's iffy patches and remember the good things from the knock. Amid nervous slashes, Farhat played a couple of off drives - the one in the seventh over against Chris Martin being the shot of the day - and a few well-timed cover drives. There was a flamboyant square drive too, on a bent knee for added effect, a crunchy pull shot and he definitely got better in the second session, during which he seemed surer of where his off stump was. He grew increasingly bolder and played big shots against Daniel Vettori to reach his hundred. Farhat found support in Mohammad Aamer in the afternoon and proceeded to lead Pakistan out of shambles. Farhat's knock, and perhaps more importantly Aamer's defiance, revealed two truths: The pitch was a true, firm surface that did offer bounce but not much movement, and the other Pakistan batsmen didn't apply themselves. Luckily for them, Farhat refused to fade away without a fight. He added 69 runs with Aamer and 35 with Umar Gul before Daryl Tuffey hastened the end with a triple strike post tea. Tuffey terminated Gul's defiance and removed Mohammad Asif for a first-ball duck before he took out the enterprising Danish Kaneria. However, till Farhat did his thing, it was O'Brien who owned the morning and Ian Smith was moved enough to say on air: "Someone offer his wife a job here ... we don't wanna miss this fella!" The icing on the cake for New Zealand was the performance from their openers; McIntosh, who has been lbw a few times in this series, took care not to get the front leg in line and BJ Watling didn't embarrass himself on debut. Their 47-run opening stand, the best for New Zealand in the series, capped a near-perfect day for the hosts.

India ask South Africa to play two Tests

Widespread fears over the future of Test cricket have been partly assuaged by the news that the BCCI has asked South Africa to play two Tests in India during their tour early next year, dropping two one-day internationals from the schedule to make space for the five-day matches.
India's change of mind - the tour was just going to comprise seven ODIs before being cut to five - came about after they ascended to the ICC's No. 1 ranking in Tests for the first time. Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola confirmed the request and said they were now trying to make space for the Tests, which would lengthen the tour by a week. "They [India] have requested we play two Tests and three ODIs and we are still considering it," Majola said. "We still have to consult with the South African Cricketers' Association, the team management, our playing regulations and fixtures committees, as well as the board. It would extend the tour by another week, but we would like to accommodate them and I don't foresee a problem with it."
The dramatic about-turn came only four days after Majola was forced to issue a statement saying the Tests in India had merely been postponed, after a storm of criticism in South Africa that the No. 1 and 2 sides in the premier version of the game would not meet in that format.
It is believed CSA is calling on the sponsors of their Twenty20 domestic competition - the Standard Bank Pro20 - to agree to a postponement of their semi-finals and final by a week in order to accommodate the Tests in India and ensure the country's top players are back for the knockout stages of the Pro20. The first round of Standard Bank Pro20 semi-finals are due to start on February 24, with the second round beginning on March 3 and the final on March 12. Those dates would all need to be shifted back by at least a week now, meaning the last two rounds of the four-day Supersport Series would have to be moved into April. The two teams that advance to the Standard Bank Pro20 final land themselves a lucrative place in the Champions League Twenty20, so the franchises are understandably eager for their best players to be available. India's newly-acquired position atop the Test rankings was under threat because they were only scheduled to play two Tests in the next 11 months, which explains its sudden interest in playing more Tests. Cricket South Africa has invariably tried to ensure they don't land on the wrong side of the BCCI, so it is likely India will get its wish and Test cricket will have a stellar showdown to look forward to.

Foreign airlines told to restart Peshawar operations by 31st

ISLAMABAD: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has set December 31 as a deadline for foreign airlines – mainly from the Gulf – to restart operations from Peshawar or discontinue services if they feel the security situation is a threat. The Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production was told about the deadline at a meeting on Thursday that was presided over by Lt Gen (r) Javed Ashraf and briefed by CAA Director General Muhammad Amin Junaid. The committee was told that foreign airlines were given the option to operate from Islamabad instead of Peshawar until the security situation improved. But it has been observed that while foreign airlines – which are now also able to carry Islamabad passengers on aircraft previously operating from Peshawar – are benefiting from the situation at the cost of Pakistani airlines’ revenue. As a result, the CAA director general said PIA and other local airlines had been suffering huge losses. He said it had also been observed that foreign airlines benefiting from the situation were reluctant to operate from Peshawar. In view of this situation, the foreign airlines have been asked to operate from Peshawar or discontinue their services for the Peshawar station until normalcy returns to the provincial capital. The committee directed the CAA to take action against airlines using “old and uncomfortable” aircraft for Pakistani passengers who were charged international fares. Citing their own travel experiences, the chairman and members of the committee said Saudi Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and Emirates Air were using “old and uncomfortable aircraft to carry international passengers from Pakistan ... they switch to the latest and comfortable aircraft in their own countries for onward international flights”. The committee members recommended that the CAA take action against airlines if they continued using outdated aircraft and ask such airlines to replace existing aircraft with new ones. The members were also critical of the PIA’s service quality. “PIA should be fined if it doesn’t improve service,” they said. The committee members also directed the CAA to focus on passengers’ comfort and sector development in the proposed aviation policy. Junaid told the committee that the authority had established a new section to monitor and check overcharging by airlines. He said the CAA would opt to refer issues related to airlines to the newly-established Competition Commission of Pakistan. Additional Secretary Ministry of Defence Maj Gen (r) Mir Haider Ali Khan told the committee that all non-regulatory activities of the CAA would be privatised when the government made a decision on the subject and the authority would have to limit its role to a regulator. The committee also recommended that the CAA construct a new airport in Peshawar near Pabbi or Nowshera.
